lev.ee  \'lev.e:1.  an embankment for preventing flooding; a river landing place. Levee  Run Farm was founded in 1940 by my grandparents and was then named Haynes Oak Ranch.  I learned to love all animals from them - A. P. and Iva Haynes.  There was a smoke house and chicken yard between the house and the old barn.  A hog pen was approximately where my new barn is situated and peafowl had the full run of the place.  There were still Jersey cows in the barn for milking and Hereford "white face" cattle in the pastures.  I had my opportunity to pick cotton (for only a short while and swathed in clothes, gloves, and hat) and ride to the cotton gin.  The smell of cotton brings takes me back there. There always seemed to puppies or kittens to load in a wagon or wag around in your arms.  Granddaddy had a gang of little solid white Spitz dogs.  The puppies were like little snowballs.

My first equine was Billy, a gray and white Shetland pony.  Billy came by way of a raffle and came with a bridle and saddle outfit.  I named him Billy because he had a beard of whiskers very much like a billy goat.  I can remember being very exasperated because Jack had to lead me in the Christmas parade.  By that time Belle had a foal that would be named Lady - my first chestnut mare.

In 1993, Katherine Barbour and I made the decision to start a horse trial.  We both loved eventing and wanted to have not only a place to school our horses but to hold competitions.  After a year or so of building cross country fences, mowing a track, and many other preparations, Jeri Byrnes came to visit.  She was our Area Chairman at the time and gave us the "go-ahead."  We needed a name for our horse trial.  Levee Run came to us as a natural - the levee runs the eastern length of the farm and the track featured a nice gallop alongside the levee in both the Training and Novice levels.  Levee Run Farm and Horse Trials it was!  The world of eventing and foxhunting has many famous "runs".  Champagne Run Horse Trials, Spring Run Hunt, Jim Graham's Meadow Run Farm to name just a few.
